For only $144 a year, you
can sponsor a child to receive a backpack filled with food
for each weekend of the school year.
The Food Bank of Northeast
Arkansas is helping serve the children at risk of hunger
in our area in an exciting
and
oh-so-important way through
our Backpack Program. According to recent statistics, 31% of
members of households using an agency of the Food Bank are
children under the age of 18.
Here’s how the Backpack Program
works:
Each Friday during the school year, Backpack Program enrolled
children receive a backpack filled with easy-to-prepare
meals and snacks in a safe and discreet manner. They bring
their backpacks home, knowing they will have food for the
weekend. Items are included for breakfast, lunch, dinner
and snack for Saturday and Sunday. Here’s a sample
menu:
Day 1
Breakfast: Granola bars
Lunch: Chicken salad kit, apple
Dinner: Ravioli, corn
Snack: Pudding
Day 2
Breakfast: Instant oatmeal
Lunch: Chicken soup, apple
Dinner: Pot roast with vegetables, fruit cup
Snack: Pudding
We are currently serving children enrolled
in Nettleton Intermediate Center and Central Elementary
in Jonesboro as
well as Stewart Elementary School in Forrest City. The response
to the Backpack Program has been tremendous, and with your
help we hope to expand our list of schools so more students
won’t go hungry on the weekends.
Lack of education is one of the root
causes of being trapped in the vicious cycle of poverty.
By meeting basic needs of
a Backpack Program child, we hope he/she will be better able
to focus on learning and schoolwork, instead of that ‘empty
feeling’. You can be part of this wonderful program
for only $144 a school year.
We promise if you join us as a Backpack
program sponsor, you’ll never look at a backpack
the same way again!
